Did you know that a rabbit’s teeth never stop growing? Because bunnies spend their lives crunching tough vegetation, their teeth have evolved to grow continuously from the root. If they happen to break or chip a tooth, it will regrow, keeping their smile functional. Humans aren’t so lucky. When we break our teeth, that enamel will never grow back. But with effective dental treatment, we can repair a broken tooth! At Bivona Family Dental, we offer safe and effective ways to restore your smile after an accident, keeping your teeth functional and aesthetically pleasing. Visit us as soon as possible for your broken tooth repair.
Is a Broken Tooth a Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency is any dental issue that requires immediate care. Most often, emergencies involve persistent pain, severe infection, and yes, broken or missing teeth. If you notice any of these issues, we urge you to contact our office right away! We take same-day emergency appointments all the time, and we even save time in our busy schedules during the day specifically for emergency care.
Some patients wonder if what they’re going through counts as a true emergency. But at Bivona Family Dental, it’s an emergency to us if it’s an emergency for you.
Take a chipped tooth, for example. Chipping a tooth isn’t always an immediate threat to your oral health, but many people want their teeth fixed for cosmetic reasons. If you have a big meeting coming up or a wedding to attend, we consider fixing your tooth an emergency. Broken teeth are typically treated as emergency issues, but it may depend on the type of break.
If you call us after hours or on the weekend, our voicemail will provide instructions. One of our on-call dentists may be available to treat you.
Types of Broken Teeth
When you call us about a broken tooth, we’ll try to get you in as soon as possible. If we can’t see you the same day, we’ll likely be able to treat you the day after.
How we fix a broken tooth depends on the extent of the damage. In general, there are 3 types of broken teeth.
- Fractured: A fractured tooth is the least severe type. This injury involves having a cracked or broken crown (the top portion of the tooth). Without damage to your tooth root (the bottom portion of the tooth), fractures are generally treatable.
- Cracked: A cracked tooth is slightly more serious, as the break is closer to your roots. Typically, the crack spans the entire crown and stops right before it affects the root. Depending on the extent of the damage, we can usually fix cracked teeth.
- Split: If your tooth is broken down the middle, effectively splitting your crown and roots in half, we may not be able to restore it. Instead, we’ll extract your tooth and replace it to keep your smile healthy and functioning.
How To Fix a Broken Tooth in Jasper, AL?
The team at Bivona Family Dental will always try to save natural teeth whenever possible, repairing your missing teeth rather than extracting them. We offer several procedures to repair teeth. Which treatment is best for you depends on the extent of the damage. Small chips and cracks can be fixed with dental bonding, or even a veneer, which helps cover up imperfections in your smile. If the damage is a bit more serious, we may use a dental crown.
Dental crowns are tooth-shaped caps that cover the entirety of a tooth. To make room for the crown, we will remove enamel on all sides of your tooth. Then, we’ll place a custom-fit crown that blends naturally with the rest of your smile. These crowns are durable, helping you keep your smile functional while also protecting your tooth from infection.
If we need to extract your broken tooth, we offer several ways to restore your smile. Dental bridges and dentures help replace missing teeth using your gums, jaw, and other teeth for support. However, these restorations don’t replace the roots of your teeth, only the crowns. With no tooth roots to stimulate your jawbone, your jaw will begin to deteriorate over time. Only dental implants replace missing teeth down to the root, keeping your smile full and your jawbone healthy.
