How Many Implants Are Required To Stabilize a Denture?

For stable, natural-feeling dentures, more implants mean better support. Discover how we can create a comfortable, permanent solution for you in the following patient education video.

People with dentures often ask how many implants are needed to stabilize their dentures. The answer varies depending on individual needs, but generally, more implants are required for the upper denture than the lower. Typically, we use four mini implants for the lower denture and six for the upper. The reason for this difference is that the bone in the upper jaw tends to be softer, so the additional implants provide the extra support needed to distribute bite forces more evenly and prevent the softer bone from being overburdened.

For those seeking a sleeker, more comfortable set of teeth, especially with ceramic options, we may recommend more implants. Traditional dentures can be bulky and may still feel cumbersome, even with implants. To achieve a more natural feel and appearance with teeth that stay permanently in place, we usually place between ten and twelve mini implants on the top and the same number on the bottom. In some cases, eight implants may be sufficient, but my goal is to secure at least ten implants on both the top and bottom to ensure a stable and permanent solution.

With this approach, we can provide ceramic teeth that are sleek, feel like natural teeth, and allow you to bite confidently into an apple. While it involves more implants, the result is truly exceptional.
