Have you been experiencing tooth pain or discomfort? While occasional discomfort can be normal, severe or persistent pain is a sign of a more urgent emergency. At Bivona Family Dental, we strongly encourage you to visit for a thorough dental examination as soon as possible. While we always aim to save your natural teeth through procedures like root canals or gum disease treatment, some teeth cannot be saved. In this case, we will perform a dental extraction, carefully removing the damaged tooth to both relieve pain and prevent the decay or infection from spreading. We perform these smile-saving procedures for patients like you daily with minimal pain thanks to our innovative solutions like L-PRF!

Explaining the Dental Extraction Procedure
For a simple extraction procedure, the process is as easy as it sounds.
First, we numb the area using a local anesthetic. Once you’re comfortable, we use specialized dental tools to loosen and carefully remove the tooth from its socket. After removal, we clean and disinfect the area, removing all leftover signs of decay or infection.
While you can usually resume all activities within a day or two, your jawbone may take several weeks to heal fully.
However, if your tooth isn’t easily accessible, we may need to perform a surgical extraction. While this procedure is more intricate than a simple extraction, it is incredibly common. For a surgical extraction, we will use both a local anesthetic and sedation dentistry to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure.
Then, we make a small incision into the gums to reveal the tooth underneath. If it’s accessible from there, we’ll carefully remove it. If the tooth is still stuck, we may break it into smaller pieces to remove carefully. Once the tooth is gone, we clean the hole and stitch the gums back together.
The recovery time for a surgical extraction is slightly longer than that of a simple extraction, but we will provide detailed instructions on how to care for your extraction site!
When Is a Dental Extraction Necessary?
At Bivona Family Dental, we only perform extractions when your tooth can’t be saved. Some common issues that may call for a dental extraction are:
- Dental trauma: Some dental trauma, like smaller cracks or chips, can be remedied with cosmetic procedures like dental veneers. For bigger fractures like a split tooth, however, we need to perform an extraction. Split teeth leave your smile vulnerable to infection and cause severe pain if left untreated. By removing this tooth, we can protect the rest of your smile!
- Gum disease: In earlier stages, gum disease is easily treatable. In the later stages, your teeth may become unsalvageable as the infection spreads too far. In that case, we may need to extract your tooth to protect your oral health.
- Tooth impaction: An impacted tooth is a tooth that doesn’t fully emerge from the gums. This is most common in wisdom teeth, which often require surgical extraction.
- Tooth overcrowding: When teeth don’t have enough room to grow properly because they are too close together, you may experience discomfort or misalignment. Additionally, some patients have extra teeth that can disrupt the normal order of your smile. To prevent these issues, we can extract extra or overlapping teeth.
Post-Extraction Procedures To Replace Your Teeth
After an extraction, we will give you explicit instructions on how to care for your extraction site. However, there are a few steps that we highly recommend looking into post-extraction.
L-PRF Therapy
We strongly encourage patients like you to undergo L-PRF therapy after an extraction.
L-PRF stands for Leukocyte-Platelet Rich Fibrin, a concentration of important components we create using a blood sample. With a centrifuge, we spin the sample of your blood in quick, circular motions to separate the different components. Once they are separate, we remove the layer rich with leukocytes, platelets, and fibrin. These components form a sort of clot that we use to facilitate better and faster healing!
After an extraction, we place this clot on your extraction site, where it will gradually release proteins and growth factors. This allows your gums to heal faster and reduces pain and swelling!
Dental Implants
After losing a tooth, we strongly encourage patients to look into replacement. Missing teeth cause your jawbone to slowly lose mass and volume, as you no longer have natural tooth roots to stimulate your bone. Without stimulation, your jawbone will shrink, changing your facial structure over time!
Dental implants not only replace your teeth with crowns, bridges, or dentures but also act as artificial tooth roots! Bivona Family Dental uses two types of implants to support restorations and keep your jawbone healthy.
Traditional implants are around 5 millimeters in diameter and require a surgical procedure to place. While these implants are sometimes necessary, we prefer to use mini dental implants for our patients! Mini implants are less than 3 millimeters in diameter and require a minimally invasive procedure that takes just one appointment! Their gentle process and sleek design offer many important benefits for patients who use mini implants to replace missing teeth.
After an extraction, we strongly encourage you to replace your teeth with dental implant-supported restorations to keep your smile happy and healthy!
