What Is a CBCT?

Watch this patient education video to learn how 3D CBCT technology enhances your care by providing a detailed view of your teeth and bone.

Conventional dental X-rays often don’t provide a complete picture, making it difficult to fully understand what’s happening with your teeth or mouth. To get a more comprehensive view, we use a three-dimensional scanner called a CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography). This technology allows us to see every detail of the bone and teeth in your mouth.

For example, some teeth have multiple roots, and on a regular X-ray, these roots can appear aligned in a way that makes it hard to see what’s happening between them. With a 3D scan, we can examine each root individually and clearly see any issues that might be present.

This advanced imaging technology gives us a detailed, overall view, allowing us to detect problems—whether good or bad—that conventional X-rays might miss. It’s invaluable for implant planning, diagnosing complex issues, and assessing bone density, helping us determine the likelihood of a procedure’s success or whether it may not be the best option.

For patients with more complicated dental concerns, the CBCT scan is an excellent tool that ensures we leave no stone unturned in diagnosing and planning your treatment.
