What Is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is an effective tool in restoring both the strength and appearance of teeth. Watch our video to learn how crowns can bring back your smile’s full function.
A dental crown is a restoration that essentially covers and protects a damaged tooth. Crowns are typically recommended when a tooth is broken, cracked, or has a cavity too large for a simple filling. While a filling is used to repair a small cavity by filling the hole with material, a crown is necessary when the tooth needs something stronger to hold it together.
A crown, sometimes referred to as a “cap,” fits over the entire tooth, providing strength and stability. Modern crowns are usually made of ceramic, which matches the natural color of your teeth and is extremely durable. I often think of a crown as replacing the damaged or worn enamel on a tooth, restoring it to its full function and appearance.
If you suspect you might need a crown or have a dental issue that feels more serious than a small cavity, it’s a good idea to come in for a consultation. We can assess the situation and determine if a crown is the right solution for you.
